On this trip we are keen to see jaguars and giant river otters. The prime location for this is the Northern Pantanal, which we enter from the small town of Pocone. Getting here involves 24 hours of travel from London, flying via São Paulo to Cuiaba and then onwards by road. The first 100km of this is tarmac but then we enter the Transpantaneira – a red dirt road, which is 140km long and has 120 wooden bridges. There is huge animal diversity here and hopefully a vast array of birds and mammals will present themselves to us. I am also hopeful that we shall see the endangered hyacinth macaw which can only be found here.
